Twelve small gifts that cost nothing
Some of the gifts we remember longest cost nothing at all. They’re the ones that say I thought of you, and you matter to me. Here are twelve ideas to get you started.
- A handwritten letter. Tell someone what they have meant to you this year. Be specific.
- An afternoon of your time. Offer to babysit, walk the dog, or sit with an older neighbour over tea.
- A recipe from your family. Write it out by hand on a card, with a note about who first made it.
- A playlist. Gather the carols and songs that remind you of them.
- A photo with a story. Print an old photo and write the memory behind it on the back.
- A promise jar. Fill a jar with small promises: one breakfast in bed, one car wash, one long phone call.
- A cutting from your garden. Herbs, a houseplant or a sprig of rosemary tied with twine.
- Your skill. Mend a coat, fix a bike, help with a CV, or teach someone to knit.
- A prayer. Tell someone you are praying for them this Advent, and then do it every day.
- A shared walk. Invite someone who might be lonely to join you for a winter walk and a warm drink.
- A thank-you. Thank the people who quietly serve all year: the postman, the cleaner, the volunteer at church.
- Room at your table. Invite someone who might spend Christmas alone to share a meal.
None of these need wrapping paper, but a kraft tag tied on with twine always makes them feel special. Our free gift tags are made for exactly this.
